The internet's most recognizable meme coin.

Dogecoin began as a joke, then grew into a large open network used for tips, payments, and community-driven projects.

Origin story

December 6, 2013 — Dogecoin launched

Built by: Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer

Dogecoin started as a light-hearted fork of Litecoin using the Shiba Inu meme. The joke caught on, and an open community built real tipping, fundraising, and payment use around it.

What makes it different

Its own rules, its own trade-offs.

Dogecoin shares Scrypt proof of work with Litecoin and has been merge-mined with Litecoin since 2014. Its monetary policy does not have a fixed maximum supply.

Not the same as: a guarantee, a bank account, or a customer-service payment rail.

How a transaction becomes real

From wallet to chain.

  1. A wallet signs and broadcasts a DOGE transaction.
  2. Nodes independently check the signature and whether the coins are spendable.
  3. Scrypt miners compete to publish a valid block; eligible Litecoin miners can also secure Dogecoin through auxiliary (merge) mining.
  4. Nodes accept valid blocks and later blocks add confirmation depth.

Supply and incentives

Why the token exists.

Dogecoin uses ongoing issuance rather than a 21-million-style cap. After its early schedule, the protocol pays 10,000 DOGE per block, so supply grows over time.

Use it safely

What can go wrong.

Meme popularity is not a security review or a promise of value. DOGE transfers are normally irreversible, and fake giveaways and impersonator accounts are common around well-known meme brands.

Verify it yourself

Look at the chain.

A block explorer lets you inspect public transactions, blocks, addresses, and fees. Never paste a recovery phrase or private key into one.
